about

The force that separates
Tearing from my hands
All the things that I love
All the things I have
Thief in the night
Time takes away
Time births pain
The downfall of life

Hourglass
Sands of time
Each falling grain
The source of pain

Marked by the season
Celebrated to hide the truth
The pain it brings
Loss of it all
You can never win
Autumn leaves
May flowers
The downpour of your life

Hourglass
Sands of time
Each falling grain
The source of pain

Destined to die
No cosmic justice
Waiting to reward
Fighting against
As it tears away your life
The tsunami of time

Meaning:
The name of this song comes from the text from ancient China, I Ching, often translated as the Book of Change, or the Classic of Change. Commentaries state that this text allows one the vision to see the greater patterns of the universe. In that sense this song is about acknowledging the patterns of our individual lives. The unidirectional path our lives travel, being forced constantly forward by time, is the ultimate source of all the suffering we experience. Time causes separation, separation from the people, places, and things that our hearts become attached to. Like a thief in the night, this separation occurs without us even being aware it’s happening, until it’s too late. And yet we mark the passage of this time in a celebratory fashion, with seasonal festivals, as if to distract ourselves away from the suffering that the temporary nature of existence brings into our lives. And in the end time causes the loss of that most precious thing to us, our own lives. There is no cosmic justice acting behind the passage of time, there is no reward waiting which makes this suffering worthwhile. It’s like a powerful tsunami, regardless of how hard you try and fight against it, your life will still be torn out of your hands by the tsunami of time.
